Electric scooters (e-scooters) have not achieved the quality consistency found in smartphones, with significant variations in quality across different models and brands. The Niu KQi3 Max is highlighted as a reliable and well-balanced option for everyday commuting, offering a slight upgrade from its predecessor, the KQi3 Pro. This newer model includes a more powerful motor, a slight increase in weight, and a larger battery capacity, which might justify the additional cost for those in hilly areas or for heavier riders.
The KQi3 Max’s assembly is straightforward, requiring only the handlebars to be attached. It presents a sturdy build, though its non-adjustable handlebars may not suit all riders. The scooter features an efficient folding mechanism, a stable kickstand, and at 46 pounds, it is not easily portable for everyone. It includes a bell, a headlight, and a display for ride data but lacks turn signal buttons, which might be expected at its price point. The scooter is also IP54 water-resistant, suitable for splashes but not for riding in the rain.
Riders initially face a speed restriction, which is lifted after traveling a short distance, with the top speed of 24 mph unlocked through the app. The app also allows for adjustments in regenerative braking and toggling features like Cruise Control. However, the app doesn’t always connect seamlessly to the scooter via Bluetooth. The upgraded 450-watt motor provides responsive acceleration and sustains high speeds even on inclines, as demonstrated on New York City’s bridges. The dual disc brakes and suspension system offer solid performance, though the ride isn’t exceptionally smooth over rougher terrain.
