Earlier in the year, they were struck by the desire to don a lightweight summer dress and navigate the town on a Vespa. However, they quickly realized that Vespas are quite pricey and their whims can be fleeting. So, they pivoted to the idea of cruising on a foldable electric bike. They sought advice from a close friend who is passionate about biking, who suggested that a decent beginner’s foldable e-bike would cost between $1,000 to $1,500. They agreed outwardly, but internally balked at the price. Further research and some reviews led them to a model by Swagtron, a brand with a name so whimsical it caught their attention, but it was the price tag, significantly below $1,000, that sealed the deal.

The bike arrived in its compact, folded form, roughly the size of a suitcase that one might attempt to bring on a flight but would likely need to check in. Charging it was as straightforward as charging a laptop—simply plug it into the wall. They heeded the instructions to not charge it for more than five hours, setting an alarm to unplug it promptly. Once they began riding, any initial unsteadiness soon gave way to the familiar ease of cycling. The electric feature is user-friendly: a switch on the frame turns the power on, allowing for acceleration by twisting the handle or pedaling; when powered off, it operates as a standard, gearless bike. Fully charged, it handles hills with ease, sparing them from arriving at their destination drenched in sweat. On level terrain, with a full battery, they even reached a speed of 18 miles per hour.

As they had (somewhat) imagined, the bike has become ideal for short trips around town. Residing in Ithaca, New York, the bike has been more than sufficient for leisurely rides, meeting friends for coffee, visiting the public library for work, and of course, biking to the gorges for a swim. They’ve even managed to carry back beautiful purple lilacs from the farmers’ market, reminiscent of a character from a whimsical romantic film. Despite its lack of sleekness—the small wheels make them consider investing in oversized clown shoes—it provides a great deal of enjoyment. Daily use has been the norm, with the battery requiring a charge only once a week.

The New York Times has suggested that e-bikes can contribute to fitness. They remain skeptical, though they acknowledge engaging core muscles to stay balanced. In their view, the true workout comes from folding the nearly 70-pound bike and loading it into their Jeep. On one occasion, the battery died at the bottom of a steep hill. They considered calling their spouse for a rescue but instead chose to pedal all the way home, avoiding the gaze of empathetic drivers in air-conditioned comfort. It was a grueling physical challenge, but it resulted in a good night’s sleep.
